Batman Begins

Batman BeginsTonight Carla and I saw Batman Begins. My first words after the movie was over: “That was Totally Awesome!” Not very long after that I said, “George Lucas should be ashamed of himeself.”

This is the “back story” to all the other Batman films. It’s a back story done right. Everything is totally believable in a movie kind of way. I thought the story was pretty original but still mostly consistent with the overall Batman story. The script (and there is a script—as opposed to the Lucas films) is quite good. The directing is top notch. The acting is superb. Nothing is overdone. It’s not showy; just a great movie. There is a lot of “star power” in this: Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman, and also the two main characters Christian Bale and Katie Holmes. All of them do a good job. None of the overpower the others. They just play their part. I think that’s a credit to the director, Christopher Nolan (who also did one of my other favorite films, Momento).

There are definitely some frightening scenes. Josh won’t see this movie for several more years. But if you’re over 13 or so, I can’t recommend this movie enough. It’s a great blockbuster film. If only more of our action/comic book movies could be like this one.

Closer

Posted by Doug Wed, 15 Jun 2005 20:22:00 GMT

Carla would hate Mike Nichols, someone I didn’t really recognize. However, he’s also done The Graduate, Primary Colors, and Biloxi Blues among many others. Very respectable movies. The writer is Patrick Marber; but I didn’t recognize anything else he’s done.

I probably wouldn’t have posted about this movie (except I want Viraj to see this; it’s his kind of movie) except I found out more information about the music. Today there’s a new shared library on our company’s network in iTunes. As I was listening to random songs from it, the theme song from the movie started up: “The Blower’s Daughter” by Damien Rice. Turns out this guy has the whole album the song comes off of. Really good moody music. This is definitely on my “to buy” list.

New DVD Releases

Posted by Doug Mon, 17 Jan 2005 15:20:00 GMT

Once again, Boing Boing pointed me to this page where the guy did his own screen scraping to generate an RSS feed of Hollywood Video’s new releases to DVD. I thought that was cool, but the feed doesn’t give anything other than the title and a link to more information. I wanted to see at least the movie synopsis as well. I did some searching around and finally found this page at Movies.com that has an XML RSS feed.
