Ezra Zygmuntowicz was the sole developer redesigning http://yakimaherald.com in Ruby on Rails. It strikes me as a fairly large project that probably has lots of “legacy” stuff to deal with. I had asked for a break down of how he built the site and his experiences. Here’s the short of it: 4 month project from start to finish with just under 1500 LOC. Here’s his full write-up
Success stories like this help everyone. Thanks for sharing Ezra!

When I switched to Typo I started using a page design called “Rio”. I liked the layout and functionality, but not the colors. When I switched my color scheme I said I’d make my old Rio theme available. Now I have! It’s uploaded to the Typo ticket system as ticket #378.
Keep in mind the theme isn’t “finished”. Some of the colors are left over from the default Azure theme. Rather than polish off Rio, I ended up switching to my current theme and putting the work in on it. Also, there are a lot of images in this theme. I’ve included the photoshop files I used to generate the PNG files.
Have fun with it! If you end up using it, I’d like to see your site. Drop me a note and let me know if you can.

Since I use Adium as my IM client and I already have a Gmail account, you can contact me via Google Talk at lathinet ‘dougalcorn’ at gmail.com. Google was nice enough to provide instructions for how to setup Adium with Google Talk.
