Severe Electrical Event

Posted by Doug Tue, 14 Mar 2006 01:50:54 GMT

It’s not much of an exaggeration to say our house got struck by lightening tonight. We didn’t actually get struck; however, it was very, very close by. I’m labeling this a “severe electrical event.”

We’ve had some of the worst electrical storms for the last several days that I’ve experienced here in Cincinnati. If I weren’t lazy, I’d go look up how much rain we’ve gotten in the last six days and compare that to both norms and records. It feels like we are totally water logged. I’m sure others have had worse, but anyway…

With the ground completely saturated with water, something nearby was struck by lightning and the electrical surge struck our house… and at least one other neighbor’s house.

I had just let the dog out in the backyard. Carla and I were marveling at how impervious he is to the rain. Just running like a crazy dog through the mud with the rain pouring down. I called him back in after he had done his business and headed down to the basement. About five or 10 seconds after he got inside the lightning struck. I was half way down the stairs to the basement when I saw a flash from the circuit breaker. Our house alarm went off and things got chaotic fast.

I went over to the breaker box to check what had happened and saw tendrils of smoke escaping. Amazingly none of the circuits tripped. After making a quick scan of the basement I went back up to find Carla struggling with the alarm system. The LCD was just flashing random gibberish. I headed back downstairs and tripped the circuit labeled “security” with no success. I then unplugged the main alarm system box with no success. Finally I just went upstairs and cut the power to the control box to silence it. Kids and dog were pretty freaked at this point.

Besides an acrid smell, I couldn’t see any damage to the circuit breaker box. Of course, I’ll call an electrician tomorrow to come check it. However, we did have several other electronic items damaged:

  • Cordless phone base station—toast
  • Time-Warner Cable DVR—toast
  • Time-Warner Cable Modem—toast
  • Oddly enough, the ethernet card in my firewall connected to cable modem—toast
  • Older 32” JVC TV—not totally toast, but the picture is noticeably bad
  • Air Conditioning/Heater—unit in basement says it’s on, thermostat control is toast
  • Garage door opener—lights come on, motor won’t work
  • HP All-in-One pcs2400 printer—toast
  • Apple 20” Cinema Display—toast
  • At least one overhead light—toast

The good news is that all three notebook computers (including my new Macbook pro) are still fine. My Dell 2001FP is still fine. The firewall PC is fine after I swapped out one of the ethernet cards. Luckily I have backup Internet access, so I can work tomorrow too.

Don’t know when the insurance adjuster will call or come out. Time Warner isn’t coming to fix their stuff until Wednesday. Haven’t called electrician or HVAC to get them to come out. Hopefully they’ll come out tomorrow. It’s a good thing the temperatures are mild, so open windows will work.

Even with the big list above, it could have been much, much worse. I’m very thankful God was watching over us and kept us all safe. Plus, here’s hoping for a new TV!

Time to Renew My Morning

Posted by Doug Sat, 15 Oct 2005 15:26:51 GMT

Mr. Coffee ISTX85 It may seem mundane to you, but I’m very excited about my new coffee pot! I got a Mr. Coffee 10-Cup, Black with Brushed Chrome Accents, Thermal Programmable Coffeemaker – ISTX85. It’s one of those appliances I use very regularly, but don’t upgrade very often.

My last coffee maker was one of those freebies from Gevalia (this i the funniest story about Gevalia I’ve read). I really liked that it used a thermal carafe instead of those “warming plates” (aka coffee scorchers). The down side was that it was white plastic and only 8 cups. After years of use, the white plastic parts had become quite stained. Also, it was taking 45 minutes to brew those meager 8 cups! I know I could have run vinegar through it like 100 times to get all the calcification out; but I’m too lazy for that.

This new coffee maker has a chrome carafe; so no stains to worry about. It also has a timer! Seems like a small thing, but it’s very exciting to wake up to coffee already made. Catering to my lazy nature, it’s also got some type of a sensor that tells me when it needs to be cleaned/de-calicfied and then an automatic mode for doing the cleaning. All I have to do is mix up the vinegar solution when it tells me and press a buttong. The one thing I wish it had is a built in grinder. I’m going for the ultimate laziness here! I didn’t want to pay an arm and a leg for it though.

Speaking of which, it’s not every day you get to rip off Wal-Mart. You can see on the web site above that the MSRP for this coffee maker is $59.99. I found it at Target for $56. Wal-Mart had it for $54. However, the “display” unit was labeled as an 8-cup maker for $38. I asked for help from someone and said I wanted the 8-cup version. She looks around and doesn’t see any boxed up, “Sorry, we’re sold out.” So, she let me buy the display unit! I could see boxed versions of “mine” clearly labeled as a 10-cup for $54. But they still let me have it for $38! So I guess the net result is that I got the maker for $16 less and helped push more jobs over to China.

Floating houses rise with floodwaters

Posted by Doug Wed, 05 Oct 2005 00:20:12 GMT

Ever since I saw Houseboat with Sophia Loren I’ve wanted to live on a house boat. With the recent flooding problems there may be more interest in it. Check out these Dutch floating houses.

These Dutch houses are designed to float if the ground they sit on gets flooded, rising with the tidewater. Regine at WMMNA has a great post on the burgeoning amphibious house movement. —Link
