I’m on a mailing list run by one of my clients called
E-nspirations. It’s a mostly periodic but somewhat infrequent mini-article written by
Jean Kelley. Today’s message was prompted by the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Jean says, “The significance of this event sent me to my bookshelf where I found Victor Frankl’s Book,
Man’s Search for Meaning.”
The last of the human freedoms is to chose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances. —Victor Frankl
I read
Man’s Search for Meaning in college while I was studying in Vienna, Austria. It is a powerful book that I read during an pivotal time in my life. It’s message is old and familiar. I have had the “power to chose” drilled into me all my life. And yet, I still seem to forget it. I still seem to let my environment dictate my responses; or my moods swing back and forth. Remembering the horrors of Auschwitz and yet Frankl can make the above statement hits me particularly powerfully today.

We had “the deepest dusting” of snow we’ve gotten in a long time. Forecasters predicted less than 1/2” of snow yesterday. Last night I measured about 7 1/2” in the middle of my back yard. I really wanted to take today off and play in the snow with the kids. My parents are in town from South Carolina. It’s Friday. It’s just a good day to have off. Oh well. The snow stopped last night around midnight and things cleared up pretty well. Everyone’s in to work today. It would have been bad for me to skip today.
I took this photo at about 10:30pm of our neighbor’s back yard. Their back yard looks a lot nicer than ours. I have no idea how much money they’ve spent on it though. I should say that Carla gets quite annoyed with these same Christmas lights. Our neighbors put them up on November 1, don’t take them down until March 31, and turn them on every night. She gets more than a little tired of it.

I catch the bus to work from a park and ride near my house. This morning was one of those classic anti-moments. I’m nearly late for the bus and walking across the parking lot. Somebody else is late and comes whipping through the lot in their mini-van. Splash! they hit a pot hole and cover my pants in nice brown water.
I mention this because I just got back from my weekly lunch “with the guys”. I had forgotten my umbrella and had to walk back just over three blocks in the rain. These pants are definitely due a trip to the cleaners.
